The ShowAll aboard the journey to the Underworld! Following a critically acclaimed run at the National Theatre and in New York, this show has now landed in the Lyric Theatre on the West End and has already taken audiences by storm. Hadestown is a musical retelling of two classic Greek tales - the young lovers Orpheus and Eurydice and King Hades and his wife Persephone. As the desperate lovers are struggling through a desolate winter, Eurydice is given an offer she cannot refuse from King Hades. This offer lands her trapped in the Underworld and Orpheus must travel down below to bring her home with only his music to save him. The narrative rooted in mythology is eerily reminiscent of our world today with themes of climate change and capitalism throughout. Packed full of outstanding music and dance numbers, an invite to Hadestown would be wrong to turn down.
History of HadestownThe earliest version of this show was first described as "a DIY theatre project" by creator Anais Mitchell when it showed in the cities of Barre and Vergennes back in 2006. In the next year, the show became a ten-city tour in Mitchell's home state of Vermont and Massachusetts. Fast forward to 2016 and the show officially premiered at New York Theatre Workshop with an EP being released afterwards featuring four songs from the musical, recorded live by creator and singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell. 2019 saw Hadestown taken to Broadway, which followed with massive success and is still a present popular show to this day. The first showing of Hadestown in the UK was at the National Theatre in London, running from November 2018 to January 2019 and it came back to the West End in February 2024.
