About the show

The Show
Premiering on Broadway in 2003, the global phenomenon Wicked continues to captivate audiences in over 130 cities, in 16 different countries and 6 different languages. Wicked imagines a beguiling backstory and future possibilities to the lives of L. Frank Baum's beloved characters from 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz', revealing the decisions and events that shape the destinies of two unlikely university friends on their journey to becoming 'Glinda The Good' and the 'Wicked Witch of the West'.

Adapted for the stage from Gregory Maguire's acclaimed novel 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West' by writer Winnie Holzman and featuring songs Oscar® and Grammy® Award winning Stephen Schwartz, Wicked is an ingenious re-imagining of the 'Wizard of Oz' story.

History of Wicked
In 1998 Stephen Schwartz approached Universal to realise his vision of a spectacular Broadway production of Maguire's novel which, after several musical workshops, arrived on Broadway in October 2003 - with the London production following 3 years later in September 2006. Now a two-part cinematic spectacular, the unflinching popularity of this wonderful smash-hit musical shows no signs of waning.

Wicked is the 9th longest running West End show of all time and has been seen by over 70 million people worldwide.

Awards and what the Critics say
Wicked has received over 100 global awards including 3 Tony® Awards, 2 Olivier Awards and a Grammy® Award.

The classic musical is one of the West End and Broadway's most popular, spectacular and unforgettable shows. Lynn Parsons tells her listeners "There is no show in London that matches the wit, wonder of Wicked - an unforgettable enchanting triumph, dazzling the senses and touching the heart", while Tim Lichfield states that "Wicked combines spectacular visuals and production values with an ingenious story, brilliant performances and genuine emotion". Perfectly summed up, Luke Smith simply puts "It's the best show I've seen in the West End".

Interesting facts about Wicked
Through its For Good programme, Wicked spearheads a range of causes which stem from themes encountered in the musical. Wicked Day, where productions around the world unite to raise money for charities is celebrated on the 30th October each year.

Elphaba's perfectly green foundation is made especially for the show by the cosmetic company MAC.

The name Elphaba was coined by author Gregory Maguire, inspired by the initials of L. Frank Baum (LFB), the author of the original Oz Book Series.
